Getting caught in the snow...

Yesterday afternoon I was really excited to get out of the house, and take "the teenager" into the city to finally get his golf clubs fitted, he had been waiting since Christmas!
When we bought them, the salesman told us they would fit a man up to 6' tall... much to my surprise when he was fitted, they had to add another 1/2" to the clubs. It was all very technical and I didn't understand any of it, except he was hitting them much more accurate in the simulator after the fitting than before (darn I had the camera and forgot to get pictures... sorry).
On the way home, my strong silent mysterious man called to let us know it was snowing where we lived and to get ourselves back home quickly and safely, it didn't show any signs of slowing down.
The teenager was driving on the way home...

It started snowing, but it was pretty light and fluffy stuff...

Nothing he couldn't handle, not even sticking to the road yet...
So we stopped by the store and picked up some groceries... and in just a few short minutes in the store, it was really starting to get white outside.
I decided to drive the rest of the way home, and it turned into blizzard conditions.
We only ended up with 3 inches, but it just came down all at once and made a mess of the evening commute for some city workers.
But school wasn't cancelled much to "the teenagers" disappointment!

Eat Your Veggies...

The Health Factor is a total uphill battle for me!
-
As is most everything else these days... I never get seem to get the winter blues ~ but they are creeping and lurking around and I might have more of that going on than I want to admit, because I normally love the cold and snow (I would never admit I want it to end, not outloud anyway).
-
But I found a picture I took a few weeks ago when I was really on my game for like um... "the day", and I thought if I focused on it and how much better I felt that day than I do today. Maybe, just maybe I would bring some of that good energy into my life for the moment.
-
So let's see if it works!
-
I have a hard time eating lots of veggies, but I had a bunch on hand... so I made this yummy lunch and put all this in a tortilla and grilled it to a little crunch on the outside and ate it like a sammie.... It wrapped over green, red, orange and yellow peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, lowfat mozerella cheese, lime juice, cilantro, and salt and pepper. YuUUuMMMMM!
-
*Note to self: Drink lots of water, and eat your veggies!

Boys growing up...

With the teenager growing in leaps and bounds at our house, this is a Dayley event (pun intended) at our house. When they are not wrestling they are doing this...
Back to back measuring to see who is taller.
When he was catching me in height, he would come do it with me and brag about how he was taller, even before he actually passed me. And I had to fight for my honor... it was very annoying.... but then when he passed me and it became evident, he was really past me, I had to give up the fight. At that time, it was only hopes and dreams for him to pass his Dad.

Now I am afraid it might be a close one... it may just be a matter of minutes before he passes up his Dad in height! Oh, I will be there for the historical event to take pictures for sure.
When he was really really little, my Mom gave me these school days frames to put his picture in from birth to age 6, and then from 1st grade to graduation... I love having a year by year view of how he has grown. It is funny to see the different hair styles, how he learned to pose and smile for the camera (you know those kindergarten pics are too funny grinning from ear to ear). And with this kid, you can see in his eyes the years his Dad and I were apart. It sounds kind of sad, but he too grew during that period of his life, and the smiles from that point forward are so genuine, it always surprises me how it shows up in his eyes.
-
I also have kept on the edge of the door, his height. We started it in the first house we bought... and when we moved I wanted to take the door with me, but instead My Man talked me into transferring it to paper and remarking it in our new house. So that worked well and we have his height all the way up now. It is a good place for me, because paper wears out... and if I put it on the wall, I might want to paint and would have to paint around it... on the edge of the door, I can see it when I want or close the door and it is private and personal. We include the date, and have one for the 1st day of school each year showing which grade he is going into that year... so it goes along with the pictures on the wall. It is a fun to reflect on!
They grow up so fast!

SPT ~ Self Portrait Tuesday ~ What's in a name...

(this is as close to a self portrait as I am getting today... my sickly shadow)

This weeks challenge is an explanation of how I came up with the name for my blog.
Day by Day...

1) Our last name is Dayley (spelled with "day" in it)

2) when I started my blog, I wanted to commit to write in it every day (my attempt to keep a journal... since all other attempts were failing).

3) My online journal would highlight the day to day happenings in my life, and with my family.

4) And since I find myself just trying to get from one day to the next most of the time, it fit.

5) Plus it was the catchiest thing I could come up with at the moment, and some things should not be pondered for too long or they can take away precious minutes and hours of our lives, that could be spent making memories (does that sound like the voice of experience or what?).

I had an idea many years ago (I don't think I ever told anyone) when I lived in Seattle (coffee capital) to make millions running a little coffee shop called "The Dayley Grind"... this was before there were a million coffee shops in the area. But then a few months after the bright idea, I quit drinking coffee, and the Starbucks, Seattles Best, and Tully's shops took over the city... and the bright idea faded into that black hole, that all unused creative thoughts go when they become obsolete.

**** UPDATE 08/26/2009 ****
Yes, I am a little slow... it just dawned on me that one of "our songs" from way back when, is called Day after Day by Badfinger. I am re-naming my blog.
"Day After Day"

*** UPDATE 05/19/2010 ***
Today I found a site that will turn my blog into a book.
What a great journal to have in print!
But I didn't like the title... Day after Day sounds like life is a drag to me... boring and drawn out.
That is not the case!
So I am going to try on this one....
"Day by Dayley"
kind of a clip off of day by day...but with another twist.
It's all a work in progress anyway :)

The Boys in the Band...

My Strong Silent Mysterious Man loves the guitar and plays beautiful music on it. He has even built a couple of them over the years. He has amazing hidden talents, that come out and surprise me all the time. My favorite lately is that he has started playing hymns for us to sing on Family Night, we are really having fun with it... and I have no idea why we didn't do this before now. Music really brings a special tone into our home.

A few months ago, one of his young scouts came to him and asked if he would teach him guitar. He doesn't normally teach, but he agreed to have him come over and show him what he knew. As it turns out these young kids love the same old classic rock music we loved in the 60's, 70's and 80's... so they have allot of fun learning songs together. Then somewhere along the way he brought another friend who played the bass in the school orchestra (like the classical upright kind) who had gotten a new electric bass guitar for Christmas.

They get together once a week, and jam and learn. And while both boys are pretty shy, they let me get this video of one of their songs this past week (and a photo of them... this was a big stretch for 12 year olds letting "the mom" take their picture). I think they are doing a great job, and I love having the music in my home. They tease my husband about being an old man and liking "their" music. And they laugh that "the band" would be made fun of with two "almost" 13 year olds and a "near 50" year old... probably not the next Beatles.

Serving in the church...

These ladies have become so close to my heart.
I am blessed to serve with them in the Young Women Program of our church.
We meet every week and are currently planning lessons for ward conferences, and Stake Girls camp in July, get to know you activities with the girls, Young Women in Excellence Program where they are recognized for their achievements, provide training for ward leaders over each young women group, and many many more facets to the program. I have learned so much about the power of prayer as we seek guidance individually and together for these girls under our wings.
None of these ladies are bloggers and they were very reluctant to do a self portrait, but because of the love we have felt for each other as we serve the young women
in our stake, they trust me :)
